Subject: SUSPECT ARRESTED IN FATAL SHOOTING IN CITY COLLEGE PARKING LOT
San Francisco Homicide inspectors today arrested a suspect in the July 12, 2003 fatal shooting of Robert Ramirez while he and a companion sat in a parked car in the San Francisco City College parking lot. The companion, Brendan Burke, was shot numerous times and is still recovering. Philip Sands, 24, of San Francisco, was taken into custody on a murder charge. Bail has not yet been set. The arrest is the result of an ongoing investigation conducted in close cooperation with the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
Mr. Ramirez and the murder suspect had known each other for a long time, since grammar school. The shooting may have stemmed from a stabbing incident in September of 2001 for which Sands is currently awaiting trial. Ramirez was a potential witness in that trial.
