PRESS RELEASE

Subject:          LOTTERY FRAUD ALERT

The San Francisco Police Department Fraud Section is alerting San Francisco residents, particularly Hispanics, of a fraudulent lottery scam perpetrated by an organization calling itself “El Gordo Sweepstake Lottery Company SA.”  The scam involves this organization sending a letter with a Spain postmark announcing that the recipient, as one of the “eleven international winners,” has won a large amount (over $615,000).  The recipient is required to fax back a form to the “Santa Lucia Security Company,” completing bank account information, so that the company can deposit the winnings directly.  The “company,” of course, uses the bank account information to its own advantage.

While the Fraud Section is continues to investigate this scam, the public is urged not to respond to the letter by providing personal bank account information.
