Subject: Acting Chief Heather Fong To Participate In Child Safety Seat Press Conference February 9
Acting Police Chief Heather Fong and representatives from the police department will join officials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote child safety seat use in a press conference to be held Monday, February 9, at 924 Mason Street in the Presidio, starting at 10:00 A.M.
The press conference will kick off NHTSA’s annual Child Passenger Safety Week. Since traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children aged 4-14 years, the proper use of child safety seats, booster seats and seat belts reduces the risk of death or injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers in passenger vehicles. Acting Chief Fong states, “Securing your child in the right restraint system every time you travel is one of the most important things you can do to protect your child in a crash.”
An officer from the SFPD will demonstrate the proper installation of child safety seats and will be available to answer questions from the public. As part of the SFPD’S Child Passenger Safety Program, certified police department technicians at each of the ten district police stations see an average of 15-20 parents each week to inspect their children’s car seat and to educate them about its use.
