Subject:     Police Arrest Four Suspects In Robbery, Grand Theft Ring

San Francisco police have arrested four suspects wanted in a series of retail opportunist thefts and robberies burglaries and a robbery.  Taken into custody on March 1, 2004 were Rose Aguilar, 25; Maria Gonzalez, 33; Juan Ipanaque, 30; and Martha Flores, 44.  Each is being held in County Jail and charged with numerous felonies.

This organized ring is suspected of committing five grand thefts in San Francisco and San Pablo between November 7, 2003 and March 1, 2004.  In one of the cases, an elderly man who operates the Tel Aviv Delicatessen on Irving Street was seriously injured and fell into a coma.    He is now recovering and faces extensive rehabilitation.

On March 1, 2004, Officer Lori Brophy observed  a store clerk struggling on the street with Aguilar.  Officer Brophy’s investigation into this incident, another organized theft, led her to suspect that Aguilar was part of this ring.  Officer Brophy broadcast that a second suspect was outstanding. Officer Mark Lantrip took Gonzalez into custody after she attempted to board a Muni bus to facilitate her escape.

Both suspects were transported to the Robbery Detail for follow-up investigation.  Later that evening, Robbery Inspectors John Peterson and Dan Leydon arrested Ipanaque and Flores  after they were observed inside a bail bonds office attempting to place bail for their conspirators.

The quick action of the officers and prompt investigation of police inspectors resulted in ridding the streets of an organized theft ring that creates diversions in retail establishments and perpetrates opportunist thefts.  The Robbery Detail continues to look into other cases as this investigation continues.
