Subject: Special Olympics Torch Run June 23
The San Francisco Police Department Special Olympics Torch Run will take place on Wednesday, June 23, in Union Square starting at Hosted by the Union Square Merchants Association, about a hundred law enforcement and community group runners will run from Union Square through the city’s neighborhoods. The race will conclude back at Union Square, where there will be a closing ceremony at , when the SFPD will ceremoniously pass the Olympic torch to Oakland Police Chief Richard Word. Mayor Gavin Newsom and former Mayor Willie Brown will join Police Chief Heather Fong at this ceremony.
The Torch Run route will include the Tenderloin, Civic Center, SBC Park, the Embarcadero, and the Marina and Financial districts before returning to the starting point. All the runners have sponsors, who pledge money to the runners and which is donated to Special Olympics.
