Subject:    SFPD Traffic Division Enforces School Bus Safety Law

The San Francisco Police Department Traffic Division will be focusing on enforcing the law regarding the unlawful passing of a school bus as the school year begins.  Section 22454.5 of the California Vehicle Code makes it unlawful for a motorist to pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing.  Lieutenant Al Casciato of the Traffic Division said that,  “The most potentially dangerous situation is the possibility of a child darting from a school bus out into the street.”

Motorists should take special care to remain stopped behind a bus until all students have gotten off the bus, the red flashing lights have stopped flashing and the bus is proceeding.
