Subject:     Police Chief Fong To Award Bicycles At Event December 15

Police Chief Heather Fong will award bicycles to deserving youth at the Second Annual San Francisco Elks Club Bicycle Refurbishing Project Dinner and Bicycle Presentation on Wednesday, December 15 at the Elks Lodge, 450 Post Street, at 7:30 P.M.  (The dinner begins at 6:30 P.M.)

The Bicycle Refurbishing Project is a cooperative effort between the Elks, the SFPD, Sunset Scavenger, the California Medical Facility (CMF) and Vacaville State Prison to refurbish discarded bicycles, which are given to youth who demonstrate neighborhood leadership qualities and strong character.

San Francisco police volunteers transport discarded bicycles obtained through DPW and Sunset Scavenger and transport the bicycles to correctional facilities, where the inmates completely refurbish the bikes, and pick them up when they have been refurbished. On the presentation evening, the bikes are given to youth whose names have been submitted by officers at Tenderloin Police Station who are familiar with the outstanding youth in the neighborhood.

“We’re very proud of this program,” said Lieutenant Bill Darr, who is an Elk member and who has been involved with the program from its beginning.  “It’s a great example of community policing, working with public and private organizations to help youth.”
