Subject: Chief Fong To Be Honored At Cathedral Anniversay Celebration January 21
As an alumna of St. Mary’s Chinese School, Police Chief Heather Fong will be the guest of honor at the 150th anniversary celebration of San Francisco’s Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral, California Street at Grant Avenue, on Friday, January 21. The event will begin with a Mass at 12 noon. Chief Fong will be joined by Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Aaron Peskin and other dignitaries. Mayor Newsom will declare January 21 as Old Saint Mary’s Day, and Supervisor Peskin will proclaim the day as Heather Fong Day in recognition of her long-standing dedication to public service. News crews are welcome to film inside the church during the Mass and following ceremony.
Originally dedicated on December 24, 1854, this architecturally significant Gothic-inspired, redbrick landmark was originally California’s first cathedral. Now known as Old Saint Mary’s, the church remains the home of a diverse community, and welcomes people of all faiths from the community and from all over the world. Under the direction of the Paulist Fathers, the church is in the midst of a campaign to preserve its landmark building.
