Subject:     Safety Tips During The Holiday Shopping Season

The holiday shopping season is a season of opportunity for pickpockets and other opportunist criminals.   There are ways to help prevent becoming a victim. The best protection is to remove the possibility of becoming a victim.  Remove identification and credit cards you don’t normally use and leave them securely at home.  Never carry more money or credit cards than you need on a particular day.  If you must carry a large amount of cash, divide the amount among several pockets.

Tips for men:

  • Pickpockets target areas are the back trouser pockets and suit/sports cost pockets, both the inside and outside pockets.  Generally, pickpockets avoid the front pockets or buttoned or zippered pockets.
  • Never pat your pocket to ascertain if your wallet is there.  Such action indicates to the pickpocket the location of your valuables.

Tips for women:

  • Don’t carry your wallet in your purse.
  • Use a purse that is difficult to open and closed properly when you want to close it.
  • If you use a shoulder bag, placed the strap diagonally across your body to keep the purse in front of you instead of at your side or behind you.

General prevention tips:

  • Be alert as to the people around you.
  • Avoid displaying money or valuables in public.  Don’t carry valuables in a backpack.  Anyone can reach into a backpack without your seeing or feeling.  Wear fanny-backs in front of you.
  • Don’t leave your wallets or purses unattended on counters or dressing rooms.
