Subject:     DUI Checkpoint Friday

The San Francisco Police Department and the California Highway Patrol will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday, December 16 starting at 5:00 P.M.  The location will be disclosed to the media two hours prior to the commencement of the checkpoint.

This operation is part of the statewide Safe and Sober/AVOID Program, which is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol-related injuries from traffic collisions, increasing the number of arrests for driving under the influence, and educating the motoring public regarding the dangers of driving under the influence.  Officers will also use this opportunity to enforce California’s mandatory seat belt and child safety seat laws.

In 2004, the SFPD conducted 38 saturation patrols, ten DUI checkpoints and five DUI warrant service operations targeting habitual offenders.  As a result of these operations, the SFPD made 572 DUI arrests in 2004 as opposed to 629 DUI arrests during 2003.   Sergeant Gile Pursley of the SFPD Traffic Division said that, “I believe the reason for the lower number of arrests in 2004 is largely due to the high visibility of the enforcement programs and increased public awareness, as well as increased media coverage.”

Funding for this program has been provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
