Subject:

Police Arrest Suspect After Western Addition shooting Saturday

San Francisco Police Department Narcotics officers working in a violence reduction program in the Western Addition last Saturday, October 21, were responsible for the quick apprehension that evening of a suspect who at approximately 9:00 P.M opened fire in a Japantown bar at1704 Post St, striking two Asian women, before going outside and shooting a 22-year-old Asian male walking with a female companion. One of the female victims, 22 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene; the male victim died the next day. The second female victim inside the bar suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Two of the Narcotics officers on duty in the area responded to the scene, gathered information from witnesses about the suspect and quickly broadcasted a description. In response to the broadcast, additional Narcotics officers also involved in the violence reduction program in the area saw the suspect get into his car, a 2007 white Ford, and followed him in their car to Webster and O'Farrell streets. At this point Tactical officers in a marked police vehicle from Northern Station began following the suspect, who drove to Oak and Webster streets, where the suspect got caught in traffic, got out of his car and surrendered. Police arrested him without incident and recovered from the vehicle a handgun believed to be used in the shooting.

Taken into custody was Joseph Melcher, 25, of San Mateo. He has been charged with two counts of homicide, one count of attempted homicide, and one count of aggravated assault with a firearm.
