Police Chief Heather Fong Announces Implementation Of Additional Foot Patrols

San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong today announced the police department's deployment of 44 new officers to augment foot patrols throughout the city's ten police districts by November 24. The 44 officers are comprised of 36 officers who have completed their field training, and 8 automotive service officers whose positions have been civilianized.

Police Chief Fong said that the additional officers will be deployed based on the decisions of police station captains who have analyzed crime patterns and have responded to community input based on ongoing community meetings. It is the police captains, with their years of policing experience at the station level, she said, who are best equipped to determine where foot patrols would be best utilized within their respective districts.

Training for the new foot beat officers will begin on November 20, and the additional officers will begin their foot patrols on November 24.

The Department's recruitment efforts, which between January 2004 and June 2006 have generated 268 new officers, combined with the civilianization of dozens of non-public safety positions, have made these 44 positions possible. The recruitment program is ongoing, with the plan to recruit an additional 250 officers during the current fiscal year.

The deployment of the 44 full-time, foot beat officers will be as follows:

  • Central Station. Two additional officers at Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square.
  • Southern Station. Five additional officers mid-Market, and in the area bounded by 4th, 5th, 6th, Market and Folsom streets.
