Cold Case Homicide Solved After Ten Years

On October 23, 1996, the body of thirty-five year old Maryann Tolosa was found in a parking lot near #1 Owen Street, San Francisco . It was later determined that she had been strangled.

On December 5, 2003, the San Francisco Crime Laboratory Cold Hit Team notified Homicide Inspectors that DNA evidence from the scene of the murder matched that of State Prison inmate Luis Perez.

San Francisco Homicide Inspectors traveled to the Mule Creek State Prison, Ione, California to obtain a reference sample of Perezs DNA to confirm the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) hit. The sample was obtained and then given to the SFPD Crime Lab for comparison. Perezs reference sample matched the CODIS hit.

Homicide Inspectors developed corroborating evidence linking Perez to the murder of Maryann Tolosa. An arrest warrant was signed and issued charging Perez with the murder of Tolosa. Perez is currently incarcerated in North Kern County State Prison. Perez will be transported to San Francisco next week, and arraigned on murder charges.

This is the second murder case this month, in which the SFPD Crime Lab Cold Hit Team and the SFPD Homicide Inspectors have successfully identified and arrested a serial murderer.

Perez was charged with two other separate homicides, one that occurred in San Jose in 1984 and one in 1989 in Sunnyvale. When confronted with compelling evidence in those cases, Perez pled guilty and received life in prison without the possibility of parole. He now faces life in prison.
