Subject:

Joint Press Conference On Fourth Of July Fireworks June 29

Representatives from the San Francisco Police Department, Fire Department and Office of the District Attorney will be conducting a press conference on Fourth of July fireworks on Friday, June 29, at 10:30 A.M. at the Fire Department Headquarters, 698 Second Street at Townsend.

Present at the press conference will be Police Department Deputy Chief David Shinn, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, Fire Marshal Barbara Schultheis, and Chief of the DA Criminal Division Jeff Ross. The purpose of the press conference will be to discuss the enforcement and prosecution aspects of the use of fireworks, as well as injury prevention measures, and to provide injury and fire statistics.

The possession and use of fireworks within San Francisco city limits is illegal. The police will enforce drinking in public and public nuisance violations, as well as the sale, possession, and discharging of fireworks violations. Through the efforts of its fireworks task force, the distribution and sale of fireworks in Chinatown has been substantially abated.

On the Fourth of July, the Fire Department responds to both fireworks-related fire calls and to emergencies involving people with injuries resulting from the use of fireworks. On the Fourth of July last year, Fire Department personnel responded to 41 fire calls. Nationwide, each year more than 12,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms on the Fourth of July holiday. Nearly one-half of these injuries are to children under the age of 15. Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White encourages the public to act safely and responsibly, especially when around children. Fireworks have no place in the hands of our children, she said.
