Subject:

Fatal Tiger Attack At San Francisco Zoo December 25

A fatal tiger mauling occurred yesterday, Tuesday, December 25, at the San Francisco Zoo shortly after 5:00 P.M. In that incident, San Francisco Police responded to the zoo regarding an animal attack. When officers arrived a short while later, they found a male victim of an animal mauling in front of the lion exhibit. Paramedics were on the scene and attempted to render first aid to the victim. The victim, 17, of San Jose, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Realizing that an animal was loose in the zoo, four officers began a search and found a second male victim, 23, with injuries to his face on the ground in front of the zoo's Terrace Café, about 300 yards from where the first victim was found. The tiger had cornered the victim and, as the officers approached, the tiger resumed its attack. The officers diverted the tiger's attention from the victim and it then advanced toward the officers. All four officers fired at the tiger, killing it. Police found a third mauled male victim, 19, near where the second victim was found. The second and third victims, who are brothers from San Jose, were transported to SFGH with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police, along with zoo employees, conducted an inventory of other animals in the zoo. All were accounted for and in their secured area. Accompanied by zoo employees, San Francisco Police and the San Francisco Fire Department, with the assistance of a CHP helicopter, searched to confirm that there were no other victims. Police continue to gather information in the event this incident is determined to be criminal in nature.

Anyone who witnessed the attacks is urged to contact the General Work Detail at 553-1141.
