San Francisco Police Arrest Suspect In Sexual Assault Incidents

San Francisco Police arrested a suspect in two recent sexual assault incidents against prostitutes. Taken into custody July 21 was Israel Mendez, 29, ofDaly City.

Mendez is the suspect in sexual assaults that occurred on June 29 at 19th and Shotwell streets and on July 6 at Mariposa and 17th streets, both in the late evening. In each incident, the suspect picked up the victim and drove her to an isolated industrial area and raped her. In the first incident, Mendez threatened the victim with a sharp instrument and in the second incident he beat the victim.

Noting similarities in the attacks, police focused attention on the high prostitution areas of the Mission district and located Mendez inside his vehicle on July 21. He was taken into custody without incident.

Mendez was charged with kidnapping to commit rape, false imprisonment, threats and other assorted sexual assault crimes. He remains in custody.

The police department believes that there have been other incidents of this nature and urges anyone with information to contact the Sex Crimes Detail at 553-1361.
