The SFPD Traffic Company has formed a partnership with the Department of Parking and Traffic, the Department of Public Health, the Metropolitan Transportation Agency, and advocacy groups to form the SAFE Streets Task Force. The task force aims to work collectively to address all traffic safety issues through traffic engineering, education, and enforcement. The SAFE Streets Task Force has made pedestrian safety a major priority. Recent safety improvements in specific areas include the following:

Engineering

  • Priority signal timing
  • Traffic island improvements to shorten crossing distances

Education

  • Pedestrian safety campaigns conducted at community presentations and neighborhood meetings
  • Public Awareness Days at specific locations to educate motorists and pedestrians
