PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE
PRESS RELEASE

December 24, 2008

Subject:

San Francisco Police Department New Year's Eve Advisory

The official city location for New Year's Eve inSan Francisco will be on the Embarcadero, just south of the Ferry Building. The event is free to the public. There will be a fireworks display launched from barges in the bay at midnight, in the vicinity of Mission Street and the Embarcadero. There will be fireworks only; there will not be any accompanying entertainment. This family event is alcohol free. No public consumption of alcohol will be allowed.

There will be a significant police presence, and the San Francisco Police Department will be enforcing a zero-tolerance policy regarding public drinking and any other criminal activity.

Those attending the celebration are encouraged to enter the area using streets other than Market or Mission. The fireworks cannot be seen from Market Street; the best viewing is on the Embarcadero between Mission Street and just south of Howard Street. Congestion on these streets becomes a public safety concern and may make it difficult to access the Embarcadero at all, let alone in time for the fireworks. People are encouraged to use public transportation. Muni will be free from 8:00 P.M. New Year's Eve until 6:00 A.M. New Year's Day, and BART is offering special fares and adding trains to all Bay Area destinations until 3:00 A.M.

There will be no street closures.

There will be two Public Affairs PIOs available on their media cell phones: Lieutenant Neville Gittens, 415-235-9528, and Sergeant Wilfred Williams, 415-913-9293.
