Subject:

DUI Checkpoint December 27

As part ofCalifornia's Holiday DUI Crackdown Campaign, the San Francisco Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, December 27, from 8:00 P.M. until 2:00 A.M. The media will be notified of the location two hours before the checkpoint operation begins.

DUI checkpoints are an effort to reduce the numbers of persons killed or injured in alcohol-related traffic collisions. Although 2007 marked the first year since 1998 in which alcohol-related fatalities declined in California, dropping 8.3%, injuries and fatalities continue to occur. Through checkpoints and the public calling 911 when they see a driver who appears to be drunk, dangerous drivers are taken off the road, preventing possible injury or death to an innocent driver or pedestrian.

A major component of the checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.

This enforcement operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
