San Francisco Police Youth Services Officers Join School Essay Contest Winners At Tonight's Baseball Game

San Francisco Police Youth Services officers, along with nine other state law enforcement officials, will join 100 6th-grade student essay winners in a game tonight at AT&T Park starting at 7:00 P.M. The San Francisco Police Officers Association, along with various Bay Area Police Officers Associations, will sponsor a reception for the winners to be held inside AT&T Park prior to the start of the game. The recipients will gather in Willie Mays Plaza at 5:00 P.M.

The 100 students, part of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program in schools, constitute the winning entrants in the 8th annual GREAT essay-writing contest, sponsored by the San Francisco Giants and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF&E). The students chose as their topic either Making My Community a GREAT Place, or Why Violence and/or Gangs Are Not a Good Life Choice. Panels of law enforcement officers chose the 100 winners out of thousands of entries. The contest is one way of helping kids learn that there are positive alternatives to the gang lifestyle.

The San Francisco Police Department has participated in the GREAT program for the past five years as a way to help prevent youth crime, violence and gang involvement.
