PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE PRESS RELEASE

October 5, 2009
09-104

Subject: San Francisco Police Officer-Involved Shooting

On Sunday, October 4, 2009 in the Mission District, San Francisco Police officers responded to a call of a man breaking windows.

At 7:40 pm, officers responded to the 500 block of 14th Street, on a call of a mentally disturbed man breaking out windows. Upon arrival, they encountered the 27 year old male suspect. The suspect was armed with a knife and exhibited hostile behavior. The officers spoke to the suspect and then used their Oleoresin Capsicum (Pepper spray) in an attempt to subdue the suspect, but it appeared to have no effect on him. The Extended Range Impact Weapon (Less that lethal, sock type projectile) was deployed, and connected with the suspect, but appeared to have no effect on him.

The suspect continued to exhibit the hostile behavior, and the officer(s) shot, and took the suspect into custody. The officers immediately began to render aid for the gun shot wounds, and for self inflicted injuries. The suspect was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, for treatment to what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
