AVOID THE 8 SETS Sobriety Checkpoint for Saturday, February 26
Multi-jurisdictional enforcement event starts at 8:30 p.m.
United States Park Police officers will join San Francisco police in a sobriety checkpoint set for Saturday, Feb.
26, at Geary Blvd. and 9th Ave. It begins at 8:30 p.m. and ends at 1 a.m.
The checkpoint is aimed at preventing DUI crashes by educating the public about driving sober and by taking
dangerous drunk drivers off the road before they hit and hurt someone, said Capt. Al Casciato, who commands
the San Francisco Police Dept.’s Traffic Company.
Casciato is the chairman and founder of Avoid the 8, the coalition of police departments in the City that band
together to fight drunk drivers.
“We never call a DUI crash an accident,” he remarked. “They are collisions, 100 percent preventable collisions.
Everyone knows that driving drunk or high kills people.”
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
